Ingolf Kaiser

Ingolf studied law at Oxford university and qualified as a solicitor in 1993.  He became a partner of another London law firm in 2000 and joined MFB in 2021.

Ingolf advises shipowners, charterers, insurers and traders on all aspects of maritime and trade law.  He has many years’ experience of maritime casualties and disputes under charterparties, bills of lading, vessel sharing agreements, pooling agreements, contracts of affreightment, ship sale and purchase contracts, as well as sale of goods contracts and letters of credit.  

Ingolf also advises clients on a range of non-contentious matters including drafting standard terms for bills of lading, charterparties, vessel sharing agreements and negotiating long term contracts.  

Specialist areas of Ingolf’s practice include the carriage and floating storage of LNG, the use of LNG as marine fuel, advising on ESG and sustainability in shipping (including new measures from the IMO and the EU), and electronic bills of lading.  Ingolf worked with one of the leading providers of electronic bills of lading to create the legal structure for their product.  

He has been described by clients as “canny, quick and capable… a bright individual with an excellent brain… analytical but also pragmatic”. Ingolf is an officer of the IBA Maritime and Transport Law Committee and was a member of the BIMCO drafting group for the LNGVOY charterparty.

Ingolf is fluent in German and French.
