Vanil Bagwandeen

Vanil is a dual-qualified maritime lawyer admitted in both England & Wales and South Africa, with over 16 years' experience advising shipowners, operators, charterers, traders and their insurers on a broad range of shipping, marine insurance and international trade matters.

Vanil advises on complex issues arising under charterparties, bills of lading, marine insurance policies and vessel arrests. He has advised clients in arbitrations concerning off-hire, laytime and demurrage, off-specification bunkers, hire and withdrawal, unsafe ports and matters arising under the Inter-Club Agreement.

Vanil has also provided advice on high-profile maritime casualties, assisting clients and their insurers with casualty response, liability issues and recovery strategies. His experience includes matters involving collisions, statement taking,  groundings, fires, machinery damage and cargo claims, often requiring coordination across multiple jurisdictions and stakeholders. He combines technical legal expertise with a pragmatic and commercial approach to resolving complex disputes.

Vanil spent eight years working for two International Group P&I Clubs, giving him extensive experience of the commercial and practical challenges faced by the shipping industry. He has particular expertise in charterparty disputes and related contractual matters, especially from a charterers' perspective.

Prior to that, Vanil practised in South Africa for eight years with leading law firms Shepstone & Wylie and Norton Rose Fulbright. During this time, he advised on a range of maritime, logistics and transport-related matters, including vessel arrests and ship sales, customs and excise disputes, terminal operations and terminal services agreements, and the drafting and negotiation of commercial agreements and standard terms and conditions for major logistics operators.
